TAFSIR REFORMIS DI INDONESIA: RELASI TAFSIR AL-AZHAR TERHADAP TAFSIR AL-MANAR

This study aims to examine Moh. Solahudin's findings regarding the intertextual influence between Buya Hamka's Tafsir Al-Azhar and Muhammad Abduh's ideas in Tafsir Al-Manar. Focusing on the interpretations of Al-Baqarah/2:269 and Ali-Imran/3:55, this study integrates Julia Kristeva's intertextual analysis with the socio-cultural context of Minangkabau, Hamka's birthplace, which was rich in Islamic reform dynamics. The research examines two main aspects: first, the influence of Minangkabau's socio-cultural environment on Hamka's intellectual construction as a mufassir; and second, the forms of Tafsir Al-Manar's influence on the methodology and content of Tafsir Al-Azhar. An intertextual approach was employed to trace forms of haplology, modification, and transformation of ideas from Al-Manar to Al-Azhar. The findings reveal that Hamka's interpretation significantly reflects Abduh's influence, particularly in aspects of rationality and relevance to modernity. This modernist perspective is evident in the adoption of the concept of hikmah in Al-Baqarah/2:269 and the debate on the descent of Isa in Ali-Imran/3:55. Both interpretations demonstrate parallel emphasis on the use of reason as a tool for thought. This study also affirms and reinforces Solahudin's findings that, in general, the relationship between Tafsir Al-Azhar and Tafsir Al-Manar is evident in terms of methodology, approach, and sources of interpretation.
