Abstract

This article examines the contestation between Ruqyah Aswaja and Ruqyah Syar’iyyah in Javanese culture, highlighting how Islamic healing becomes a site of theological and cultural struggle. While both practices aim to expel spiritual afflictions such as devils, jinn and sihir, they reflect opposing visions of Islamic orthodoxy. The Aswaja model, rooted in Nahdlatul Ulama traditions, often blends Qur’anic recitations with sholawat, sacred water, and local mysticism. In contrast, the Salafi-oriented Syar’iyah model promotes a purist, scripturalist approach that rejects local customs as bid‘ah. Set against the backdrop of Java’s syncretic spiritual culture, this contest reveals deeper tensions between tradition and reform, locality and transnationalism. The article argues that ruqyah is not merely a healing ritual but a battleground for religious authority and cultural legitimacy in contemporary Indonesian Islam.
